THE CHAIRS
I always try to take a picture of the chair in its original state to give an idea of its previous life and to document some of its history. I strip and repair all frames, removing the old cover, stuffing, springs, tacks and staples and then fill holes, secure joints and sand down before starting the re-upholstery process.
RE-UPHOLSTERY
Once the frame is clean and secure I use traditional methods and natural fillings to reupholster the chair. The inside layers include hessian, coconut fibre, wool, hair, latex, calico, springs and natural twines in various forms to create the shape. The top cover is either recycled fabrics and leathers stitched together or fabric containing a high percentage of natural fibres - wool, linen, cotton - ideally 100% natural fibres!
FABRIC & BESPOKE DESIGN
I use any smaller fabric and leather offcuts/samples to patchwork together designs to make extra creations like cushion covers, door stops, dog beds, bears and bags. See 'My Work' for examples.
